Before students can take creative risks, share ideas, collaborate, or trust their own voice, they need to feel safe enough to participate. Doodle Bop creates a playful entry point into that kind of classroom environment.

How Doodle Bop Works
Doodle Bop is designed to create a safe, collaborative environment where every participant can contribute—regardless of artistic experience. Through a series of guided creative prompts, participants move from individual expression to collective imagination, discovering that creativity grows through connection.
1. Create
We begin with simple drawing prompts that encourage play, curiosity, and experimentation. There are no mistakes, no right answers, and no pressure to create something "good." The goal is simply to begin.
2. Collaborate
Participants pass their drawings to one another, adding marks, colors, and ideas to each other's work. Music, movement, and shared creativity transform individual drawings into collective works of art. As participants begin building on one another's ideas, conversations naturally emerge and trust begins to grow.
3. Connect
As the experience unfolds, something unexpected begins to happen. The artwork becomes secondary to the relationships being built. Students become more willing to ask questions, share ideas, support one another, and participate. What begins as a drawing exercise becomes a shared creative experience rooted in trust, play, and connection.
What Happens During Doodle Bop
Safety Comes First
Before students became more creative, they became more comfortable. As they relaxed into the experience, they became more willing to participate and take creative risks.
Music Changes the Room
Music became the heartbeat of the experience. Inviting students to contribute to the playlist gave them ownership of the space and helped create an atmosphere of play and flow.
Collaboration Builds Confidence
As students passed their artwork around the table, they began talking more freely, asking classmates for materials, and encouraging one another. Shared creativity became shared confidence.
Everyone Participates
The facilitator isn't separate from the group. Everyone creates together. There is no "us and them." The experience works because everyone contributes to the collective artwork.
Why I Created Doodle Bop
For much of my childhood, I didn't feel safe expressing who I really was.
At school I often felt isolated and quiet. At home, life was chaotic, and I learned to keep many of my thoughts, feelings, and creativity to myself. Like so many kids, I became skilled at hiding parts of who I was simply to fit in.
Yet there were two places where everything changed.
An art classroom surrounded by friends.
A baseball field surrounded by teammates I trusted.
In both places, I felt something I couldn't explain at the time. I wasn't worrying about being judged. I wasn't trying to be perfect. I simply felt safe enough to create, play, compete, and be fully present. On the pitcher's mound, my body knew what to do. In the art room, my imagination came alive. Both experiences gave me something I had been searching for—a place where I could simply be myself.
Looking back, those moments taught me something I wouldn't fully understand until much later.
Creativity doesn't grow because we're talented.
It grows because we feel safe.
Years later, after playing professional baseball and building a career as an artist, I realized I was still chasing achievement, recognition, and perfection. From the outside, many of my dreams were coming true. But inside, I was still searching for that same feeling of safety, connection, and freedom I had experienced as a kid.
I eventually realized that what I had been searching for wasn't success.
It was safety.
It was trust.
It was permission to create without judgment.
Doodle Bop grew from that realization. In many ways, Doodle Bop became the experience my younger self needed but never had.
